Celebrating Neuropathology’s Contributions to Alzheimer’s Disease Research Centers

This past October, a collaborative publication in Alzheimer’s & Dementia: The Journal of the Alzheimer’s Association provided a comprehensive retrospective on the vital role of neuropathology within the National Institute on Aging’s (NIA) Alzheimer’s Disease Research Centers (ADRCs). As we move through the 42nd year of this national network, the publication reflects on the 40-year milestone and the foundational role neuropathology has played in our entire research enterprise.

We are proud to recognize the contributions of our own investigators, Dr. Mark Cohen (CADRC Neurpathology Core Leader) and Dr. Karin Mente (Clinical Core Investigator at the VA), who served as authors on this landmark paper.

The Foundation of the ADRC Mission
For over four decades, the ADRC network has relied on neuropathology as the "ground truth" for understanding the full spectrum of neurodegenerative diseases. This discipline has been central to shaping our understanding of:

  • Proteinopathy: The complex accumulation of misfolded proteins.
  • Selective Vulnerability: The biological reasons why specific brain regions are affected by disease.
  • Clinicopathologic Correlation: Bridging the gap between observed clinical symptoms and post-mortem biological findings.

This work has been instrumental in driving biomarker development, informing the design of clinical trials, and enhancing our understanding of disease heterogeneity—not just in Alzheimer’s, but across the broad landscape of neurodegenerative disorders addressed by the ADRC.

The Future: Integrating Digital Pathology and Pathomics
As the ADRC program continues to evolve, neuropathology remains at the cutting edge. The integration of digital pathology, advanced genetics, and pathomics is defining the next generation of precision medicine. By leveraging these technologies, we are refining diagnostics and deepening our insight into the molecular mechanisms of disease, reinforcing neuropathology’s position as the essential anchor of the ADRC mission for the future.
