CADRC Resource Request: Research Access to Biospecimens, Brain Tissue, Imaging, and Data

The Cleveland Alzheimer’s Disease Research Center (CADRC) provides research resources—including biospecimens, neuroimaging, and clinical, biomarker, and neuropathology data—to investigators at our partner institutions (Cleveland Clinic, University Hospitals, the Louis Stokes Cleveland VA Medical Center, and Case Western Reserve University) as well as affiliated collaborators.

Resource requests are reviewed on a rolling basis, with consideration given to resource availability, scientific merit and feasibility, and potential overlap with ongoing or previously approved studies.

DISCLAIMER: While we aim to collect a complete set of biospecimen, clinical data and imaging resources for each subject enrolled in the CADRC, we may not always have a complete set available to share for each subject.

CADRC Resources Available for Request

Biospecimens

Use of CADRC biospecimens requires approval of your study proposal by the CADRC Executive Review Committee and confirmation that the requested specimens are available. Investigators must also obtain local IRB approval and secure funding for specimen shipment.

CADRC investigators may also access additional biospecimen resources through our affiliated institutions, including Cleveland Clinic, University Hospitals, the Louis Stokes Cleveland VA Medical Center, and Case Western Reserve University.

  • Whole blood & whole blood DNA
  • Whole RNA
  • Cerebrospinal fluid

Brain Tissue Request

Brain tissue is a limited and valuable resource obtained from CADRC participants who have passed away. Because the CADRC is a relatively new ADRC (recruitment began in 2019), only a small number of participants have died to date.

The CADRC can also access tissue from individuals with atypical Alzheimer’s disease through our Neuropathology Core’s leadership at the National Prion Disease Pathology Surveillance Center (NPDPSC) at CWRU. This affiliation provides access to NIA-AA–diagnosed brain tissue.

What’s Available:

  • Frozen brain tissue
  • Fixed brain tissue
  • Formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded blocks/slides
  • Treated or untreated with formic acid
  • Stained (IHC, H&E) or unstained

Imaging

The CADRC Neuroimaging Core provides a range of imaging data to the ADRD research community, including advanced quantitative in-vivo measures and amyloid and tau PET. High-resolution ex-vivo hemisphere MRI with corresponding histopathology will be available soon.

MRI

  • Summary statistics
  • Curated T1 and FLAIR images (via NACC)

Data vary by subject based on selected scan sessions

Data

The Data Management and Statistics Core (DMSC) provides support for data requests from the ADRD research community. The DMSC maintains a comprehensive relational database containing all CADRC-collected data, including NACC-defined UDS data and additional locally collected elements.

Please note that NACC maintains and distributes complete datasets for all ADRC-enrolled participants. If the sample size you need is not available through the CADRC, we encourage you to visit the NACC website, which also provides data dictionaries for all UDS and other NACC-defined elements.

  • APOE genotypes
  • Neuropathology data

Requirements for Data and Sample Sharing

Material Transfer Agreement (MTA)

  • If you are not affiliated with a CADRC institution, a Material Transfer Agreement must be fully executed before any samples can be shipped.
  • To initiate this process, please contact CADRC@ccf.org

Data Use Agreement (DUA)

  • If you are not affiliated with a CADRC institution, a Data Use Agreement must be fully executed before any data can be shared.
  • To initiate this process, please contact CADRC@ccf.org

IRB Approval

  • Investigators must obtain approval from their institution’s IRB for the proposed research before CADRC specimens or data can be shared.

Acknowledgement

  • Please acknowledge the Cleveland Alzheimer’s Disease Research Center (CADRC) and its grant AG072959 in any publications using CADRC samples, data, or images.
  • Proper acknowledgement supports continued funding and enables us to keep sharing these resources with the research community.

Notify Us About Your Publication

  • If CADRC samples, data, or images are used in a publication, please provide the CADRC with a final copy of the manuscript.
